COMMERCIAL and industrial business owners in Shah Alam who have not renewed their licence will need to do so this month or risk being compounded.
Shah Alam mayor Datuk Zamani Ahmad Mansor said that about 30% had not renewed their licences.
“Many businesses resumed operations after Selangor moved into Phase Four of the National Recovery Plan.
“The majority of them renewed their licences. But 8,000 to 9,000 out of more than 27,000 business owners have not done so.
“They have about two weeks to do so,” he said during a press conference held after the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) full board meeting at Wisma MBSA in Shah Alam yesterday.
However, hawkers are exempted as their licence fee has been waived until June next year under the Selangor statewide initiative to soften the economic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.
A total of 7,836 hawkers from morning and night markets, food trucks, council stalls and kiosks as well as temporary hawkers are benefitting from this ruling.
Zamani said MBSA had previously exempted licence fees for businesses that were not allowed to operate during the lockdown.
“For example, businesses such as car wash and hotels (applied only to rooms) were not allowed to operate during the lockdown due to the National Security Council’s (NSC) standard operating procedure.
“We had exempted their licence fee for the period when they were not operating.
“But for restaurants in the hotels, the fee was collected,” he said.
Zamani revealed that about 1,000 businesses in Shah Alam had either closed or relocated to other districts due to the pandemic.
“However, we will only find out the exact number next year based on the licence renewals,” he noted.
Meanwhile, MBSA has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Selangor Industrial Corporation Sdn Bhd to market new construction products, develop smart and sustainable urban solutions, and for sharing access to telecommunication infrastructure.
Through the MOU, Selangor Industrial Corporation will become a platform for MBSA to market the city council’s various construction products such as its Composite Porous Concrete slab and Effective Microorganisms Composite Scupper Drain that have won several national and international innovation awards.
The cooperation is also aimed at sharing infrastructure.
The MOU signed by Zamani and Selangor Industrial Corporation chief executive officer Wan Muhd Hisham Wan Hawari, was witnessed by Selangor local government, public transportation and new village development committee chairman Ng Sze Han.
